Germany’s governing coalition has delayed a vote on legislation aimed at encouraging the replacement of fossil fuel heating systems until September. The decision came after the country’s top court rejected plans to push the bill through parliament this week. The court’s ruling was an obstacle for Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition, hampering its attempts to move on from a long-standing dispute over a central climate policy plan. The government intended to pass the legislation before parliament’s summer recess, but the court’s injunction prevented lawmakers from considering it. The coalition has now scheduled a vote in early September during parliament’s next regular session. The legislation aims to replace old fossil-fuel heating systems with alternatives such as heat pumps and requires the installation of new heating systems that are at least 65% powered by renewable energy.
